(June 12, 2014) The library will hold its summer book sale for four days only during the Minerva Homecoming, June 18-21. Books for all ages and interests will be sold for 25 cents each. Proceeds support programing and guest speakers at the library this year.
(June 12,2014) John C. Haines, from Stark County, served in two regimental bands during the Civil War: the 19th and the 104th Ohio Volunteer Infantry; both regiments were organized in Stark County. Music was an important part of military life and the story of regimental bands is not well known. Join us Monday, Jun 16, at 7;00 pm, when local author Paul Hobe will regale listeners with tuneful tales of Haines and the regimental bands. Hobe also will present interesting stories of the 19th OVI, which formed in the Alliance area and served throughout the Civil War. This well-illustrated presentation includes recordings of period band music.
(June 3, 2014) Join us Monday, June 9, at 7:00 pm as local historian John H. Barnett presents the exciting story of the Confederate cavalry raid through Indiana and Ohio in July, 1863. Union troops under Major General Ambrose Burnside gave chase through 19 Ohio counties, fighting the only Civil War battle in Ohio, at Buffington Island, which saw the death of Carroll County’s Major John McCook. Finally, after a pursuit of over 500 miles, Union cavalry ran the remaining Confederates to ground near Salineville. This program is suitable for the whole family and will be held in the library's Community Meeting Room.
